New company director getting started

New company? Your first year, sorted

Start with the essentials, understand what is due and keep the first year moving in the right order.

Your first accounts

Normally due at Companies House 21 months after incorporation. A changed accounting period can affect the date.

Corporation Tax registration

Tell HMRC within 3 months of starting to trade. Incorporation and starting to trade are different events.

Your first confirmation statement

Review company details at least once every 12 months and file within 14 days of the review period ending.

Director’s Self Assessment

Check whether you need a personal tax return. Being a director alone does not automatically mean you must file one.

VAT threshold: £90,000

Monitor taxable turnover over the last 12 months and expected turnover in the next 30 days. Registration rules can apply before year end.

Paying yourself a salary

Arrange payroll and check PAYE registration before the first payday. Keep salary and dividend records separate.
